I thought the book was well written and very informative. I knew very little about Buddhism prior to my trip, so the introductory chapters provided a very informative background.I didn’t read the book cover to cover, but looked at the history, the sites we were visiting and the symbols – it added tremendously to my visit to Bhutan, adding context and allowing for a better understanding of the sites being visited. Since most of the tourism in the country focuses around the architecture, this book was the perfect "tourist guide."Since the book is an architecture review, the buildings were grouped by "types" as opposed to geographic locations -- but the sites you are going to visit are easily located in the book. There are ample pictures and graphics which add to understanding.

A book for your reading list before visiting Bhutan By Judith Brown Meyers Laura Blake has written a well-researched and documented study of the architectural and design elements of Bhutan's dzongs, monasteries and temples. She amply illustrates the use of Buddhist iconography and the influence of Buddhist history in the region to explain both the structures and their decoration. While this book doesn't have the depth of analysis and historical perspective of the work of Francoise Pommaret, Bhutan's Buddhist Architecture is a great way for anyone who is planning to or has already visited Bhutan to understand and appreciate the country's most significant buildings.

The essays in Sam Pickering’s new collection sing with thoughtful observations on life, death, love, and literature. Whether attending a reunion at Sewanee, cruising the Caribbean, wandering the streets of Storrs, Connecticut, or rambling through Nova Scotia, Pickering is able to work a quotation, insight, or reminiscence into almost every page. His collection sparks with copious observations from other writers and books that he’s devoured through the years. One of the many joys in Happy Vagrancy is finding a new author or essay hiding in the deep foliage of Pickering’s prose. He delivers his insights with humor, wit, and a keen eye for the ordinary wonders that surround us.Many of the essays touch on death and the dying, and nothing escapes description and fascination whether profound or seemingly less so: the death of a dear friend or two fledgling cardinals blown from a nest in the back yard and now covered with “periwinkle at the corner of the yard.” During a walk down a country lane, the names of flowers, birds, and bugs fill the page. Even in a meadow buzzing with life, there are reminders of our mortality and brief light too soon gone—and they remind us to read, think, and live with gusto and love.

A luminous book of essays by a master of the genre By Jay Parini I'm a great fan of Sam Pickering's essays, and have read many volumes; but this is among the finest of collections, full of wit and rue in equal measures, as when he writes: "What sustains the aged are the trivial and the curious--little matters awaken appetite for life but not lead to intellectual insomnia or rest heaven on the lights causing mental gastritus." He muses wisely on sex and death, on nature's endless bounty, looking at bugs and birds with a loving eye for detail. The is also a book about meandering, about starting off somewhere without knowing quite where the end will lie. This is, of course, what an essay is: a venturing forth. Pickering goes into the world, a happy vagrant, and brings us along for the ride.

Sports Souls began with a love of photographing world-class athletes, a passion for helping animals in need, and the ambition to combine the two successfully. Andrea Mead Cross is recognized as one of the premier sports photographers in the country and over a two-year period travelled across the country to capture an up close and personal moment with over thirty athletes. The beautiful full color portraits are unassuming and fresh with a unique perspective away from the competition arena. The athletes also write their inner struggles, philosophy on life, and what it takes to be the best. The body of work is truly inspirational for those who appreciate awe-inspiring images and the quest for perfection. The bold series includes and features renowned athletes Misty May-Treanor, Beach Volleyball star and three-time Olympic gold medallist. Taylor Phinney, two-time Olympian Cycling; Mirinda Carfrae, triathlete and three-time Ironman World Champion; Lauryn Williams, two-time Summer Olympian; gold and silver medalist for Track and Winter Olympian, silver medalist Bobsled; Tony Azevedo, four-time Olympian and silver medalist Water Polo and Diana Nyad, history-making Marathon Swimmer. Intimate look at the soul of top athletes By Peter As a competitive athlete, journalist, and photographer, I am always looking for inspiration, as well as tips and tricks that I can learn from. I was alerted to this book on social media, and thought that it would be great to see how pro photographers shoot as well as glean some insights from some of the sports top athletes. Although not filled with action photos, I really like this book. The intimate portraits of each of the featured athletes gives one a glimpse into their personalities, competitive spirit, and humanity - really the soul of each of the athletes. The photography is outstanding, the settings are unique yet intimate, and the design and layout of the book is superb. This really is an outstanding book!

The sense of a scene: Pieter Bruegel’s mastery of composition and community   The great Flemish painter Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1526/31-1569) was an astoundingly inventive painter and draftsman, who made his art historical mark with beautiful, evocative landscapes as well as religious subjects, both notable for their vernacular language and attention to everyday, contemporary life.Immersing himself in rural or small-town communities, Bruegel is particularly notable for his depiction of peasant experience and folk culture, earning the artist nickname “Peasant Bruegel.” Whether hunters shivering in the snow or a boisterous country fair, Bruegel raised the farming, festivals, gatherings, and games of peasant culture to the status of high art. Bruegel’s imposing religious and moral subjects, meanwhile, such as The Triumph of Death and The Tower of Babel are as awestriking and influential today as they were in the 16th century, inspiring contemporary culture from The Lord of the Rings cinematic battle scenes to Don DeLillo’s novel Underworld. From the corn harvest to the conversion of Saul, from quaint wedding processions to Christ’s road to Calvary, this book brings together the rich range of Bruegel’s subjects to introduce his powerful compositions of both biblical and earthly tableaux.   About the Series:Each book in TASCHEN’s Basic Art series features:

  • a detailed chronological summary of the life and oeuvre of the artist, covering his or her cultural and historical importance
  • a concise biography
  • approximately 100 illustrations with explanatory captions

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Absolutely wonderful By CSN1 This is a fantastic book from Taschen, and an extraordinary value. I've purchased almost every available book on Bruegel, and this one is near the top of the list. The reproductions are crisp and accurate, and the text by the Hagens is smart and accessible. The description by The New York Times Book Review refers to this series as offering "a fast food, high energy fix on the topic at hand", but it's not a fast fading high. Nice work to the publishers and authors! I will most certainly be purchasing more works in this series.
