About the Author

Lisa Solomon is a studio artist that moonlights as a college professor and graphic designer. Profoundly interested in the idea of hybridization (sparked from her Happa heritage), Solomon's mixed-media works and installations revolve thematically around domesticity, craft, and triggers that may be construed as masculine and/or feminine. She is drawn to found objects tending to alter them conceptually so their meanings and original uses or intents are repurposed. She often fuses "wrong" things together--recontextualizing their original purposes, and incorporating materials that question the line between ART and CRAFT. She received her BA in art in 1995 from UC Berkeley and her MFA from Mills College in 2003. She has exhibited and works with galleries both nationally and internationally, is in numerous private and public collections, and is continually tweeking artworks in her backyard studio. She resides in Oakland, California with her husband, daughter, a three-legged cat, a cross-eyed cat, a deaf French bulldog, a pit-bull, and many, many spools of thread. She is the author of Knot Thread Stitch (Quarry Books, 2012). www.lisasolomon.com

I love that it offers so many different things to draw and gives you an opportunity to get outside your comfort zone. Lisa's drawings are so fun but really approachable. I have been using it to inspire myself to draw more, and as I mentioned above, to draw things I wouldn't normally think to draw. That's been super fun, and challenging in a way that is not daunting or labor intensive, just a little push. I also really like that you can draw right in the book, and that there's color as well to inspire you even more. Great book!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. So good! By elf girl This is such a lovely book. I've enjoyed studying the many beautiful and whimsical drawings while my nine-year-old daughter has devoured this book! She's spent hours copying and practicing drawing various lamps and tables and chairs. And then proceeded to fill her own book with tiny rooms filled with furniture. So cute! And so happy this book is inspiring her to spend more time drawing.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Explore, experiment, and draw! By L. Duran There is a delightful assortment of everyday things to draw in this sketchbook. I've been toting this book around with me since I received it a few days ago, opening it up to a random page, and making a quick doodle whenever I have a few minutes. By following the author's instruction and encouragement - I'm making marks, letting the lines happen, and really 'seeing' the object (on the page or in life). I'm drawing more often and definitely enjoying it more.

Accompanying a major exhibition, this stunning survey and important monograph highlights more than two decades’ worth of Lisa Yuskavage’s brilliant and controversial paintings. Internationally acclaimed American painter Lisa Yuskavage is known for her seductive yet unsettling work, in which cartoony, vulgar, angelic young nymphs are cast within fantastical landscapes or theatrical interiors. In this dazzling monograph she presents the confrontational imagery, luscious paint, and technical virtuosity that are her signature, blurring the boundaries between high art’s classic female nudes and their naughty, soft-porn counterparts. This comprehensive new volume offers a rich overview of the artist’s work with interpretive essays by leading art historians and an interview with the artist. This will be the definitive book on this important artist.

Review "It's hard to alight on a response to Lisa Yuskavage's paintings. . . her typologies of formal painting conventions and of the consumerized female body are inseparable from one another, and their interactions produce an ever-increasing complexity: trapped between the familiar and the newly estranged, you keep looping from admiration to irritation, innocent pleasure to revulsion." -BOOKFORUM

Pain and passion: The original and intimate art of Mexico’s most famous female painter   The arresting pictures of Frida Kahlo (1907–54) were in many ways expressions of trauma. Through a near-fatal road accident at the age of 18, failing health, a turbulent marriage, miscarriage and childlessness, she transformed the afflictions into revolutionary art.In literal or metaphorical self-portraiture, Kahlo looks out at the viewer with an audacious glare, rejecting her destiny as a passive victim and rather intertwining expressions of her experience into a hybrid surreal-real language of living: hair, roots, veins, vines, tendrils and fallopian tubes. Many of her works also explore the Communist political ideals which Kahlo shared with Rivera. The artist described her paintings as “the most sincere and real thing that I could do in order to express what I felt inside and outside of myself.”This book introduces a rich body of Kahlo’s work to explore her unremitting determination as an artist, and her significance as a painter, feminist icon, and a pioneer of Latin American culture.   About the Series:Each book in TASCHEN’s Basic Art series features:

  • a detailed chronological summary of the life and oeuvre of the artist, covering his or her cultural and historical importance
  • a concise biography
  • approximately 100 illustrations with explanatory captions

TASHEN does it again By bernie After watching the Bio-Pic "Frida" (2002), Director: Julie Taymor, based on the book "Frida : A Biography of Frida Kahlo by Hayden Herrera, I decided it wad time to read more of this Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) who married Diego Rivera and was an artist in her own write. This book, "Frida Kahlo 1907-1954: Pain and Passion" by Andrea Kettenmann, Is a great and informative introduction to Kahlo, her art and the person behind the art. Not to sound shallow but the color reproductions and the photos are worth the purchase price on their own. However knowing what they are trying to portray always ads that extra meaning. No matter what book or movie you buy this is an added must to your library and a different look at the life and times of Freda.

At the end there is a summary grouped by morning, mid day, and evening. There are also hints about better vantage points than the most obvoous. I am puzzled why the pictures are only about 2 inches wide instead of page width. They do give an idea of what the scene is like.
