Discover ways in which to defend yourself from each of the 12 angles. By mastering the six essential techniques of the Abcedario (or the ABC’s) which include Foot work, Striking, Blocking and Cocking Positions, Return Stoke patterns and transferring in between strikes. You will gain the confidence to defend yourself from most any threats. As you learned the Art of Abcedario you will find yourself overcoming these fears and the law of attraction that comes from having these fears. With this book you now have a fresh start on become a master of your thoughts, emotions and body. All in all, it is an inspiring, user friendly guide that will help you well on your way to becoming a Filipino martial arts practitioner. The Abecedario (or the ABC’s) is highly underrated and an overlooked art in Arnis. There is one big problem with this; it is the base art that must be mastered. For without mastering the Art of Abecedario; it would be like knowing how to swimming under water without knowing how to hold your breath. If the tree grows without its base firmly rooted. The wind would blow it over. Or if you hit a home run and you never touch first base? It is really not a home run. I promise you to this day that if the Supreme Master was still teaching; he would start by teaching you Abecedario and you would be practicing it for the duration of your training with him; whether you’re training with him for 2 years or 20 years. Matter of fact; the late time I practiced with him in 2008 it was the first thing he pulled from his quiver. (See the beginning of the Abcedario chapter). The Art of the Abecedario is one of two Base Arts of Arnis Tendencia. It consist of a feeder and a defender. The feeder will strike at the defender the 12 Angles of Attacks; between every attack the feeder will leave his arm out for the defender to practice on. The Defender will have to block the attack, Cock his stick, use the correct Return Stroke Patterns to defend himself with then have to transfer to the next angle of attack to repeat to all the 12 angle of attack. As you begin to practice the art of Abecedario; Remember “Slow and control transforms into speed and power”. Be sure to use respect, etiquette, self-control, humility and discipline as you practice. The better you are versed in the Art of Abecedario; the better prepared you will be for the advanced Arts of Arnis. Be willing to take the time to perfect each and every aspect of the art of Abecedario.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An Example of Compatible Varibless By ALLEN GREAVES This is an excellent arnis basics book. It is very similar in concept to the San Miguel Eskrima that I studied under Mr. Peter Hood in Vancover back in my college days. There are differences but not enough to make an argument over, without looking petty and prissy. Anyone who has not seen or trained in this style should at the very least review the methodology for comparative purposes.

Since the mid-twentieth century, Zoltán Kodály's child-developmental philosophy for teaching music has had significant positive impact on music education around the world, and is now at the core of music teaching in the United States and other English speaking countries. The Kodály Today handbook series is the first comprehensive system to update and apply the Kodály concepts to teaching music in elementary school classrooms. Kodály in the Fourth Grade Classroom provides teachers with a step-by-step road map for developing children's performance, creative movement, and literacy skills in an organic and thoughtful manner. Through six years of field-testing with music teachers in the United States, Great Britain, and Hungary (the home country of Zoltán Kodály), authors Micheál Houlahan and Philip Tacka have developed a methodology specifically for 21st century classrooms. Houlahan and Tacka use the latest research findings in cognition and perception to create a system not only appropriate for the developmental stages of fourth graders but also one which integrates vertically between elementary music classes. The methods outlined in this volume encourage greater musical ability and creativity in children by teaching them to sing, move, play instruments, and develop music literacy skills. In addition, Kodály in the Fourth Grade Classroom promotes critical thinking, problem solving, and collaboration skills. Although the book uses the Kodály philosophy, its methodology has also been tested by teachers certified in Orff and Dalcroze, and has proven an essential guide for teachers no matter what their personal philosophy and specific training might be.Over 100 children's books are incorporated into Kodály in the Fourth Grade Classroom, as well as 35 detailed lesson plans that demonstrate how music and literacy curriculum goals are transformed into tangible musical objectives. Scholarly yet practical and accessible, this volume is sure to be an essential guide for elementary music teachers everywhere.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The best part is that each book contains a year worth ... By Ryan F. If you teach elementary music and want to do so effectively, you should probably purchase this entire series right away. It's incredible! The best part is that each book contains a year worth of units divided into sequential lessons and with specific repertoire (though there is plenty of flexibility if you want to use other repertoire for some parts of lessons). Even if your kids aren't caught up to the sequence (my 5th graders are currently on 2nd grade concepts), the lessons work and are adaptable to your students, your equipment, your classroom, your administration, and your overall situation. These books are an amazing resource for elementary music teacher and something that the elementary music world has been lacking for much too long. The lessons can also serve as an outline that can be supplemented with other activities (concert prep, Orff activities, instrumental performance, etc).

"Jervis McEntee" presents new scholarship and color reproductions that redefine McEntee s place in the history of nineteenth-century American landscape painting. The lead essay by exhibition curator Lee A. Vedder makes the case that McEntee was far more than a painter of somber late fall landscapes. He set his own course, absorbing influences of his fellow Hudson River school painters including Frederic Church, Sanford Gifford, and Asher B. Durand, while also responding to the atmospheric painting of J. M. W. Turner, the trauma of the Civil War, and the shifts in American tastes to French Barbizon painting and Impressionism. Additional essays expand the scope of McEntee scholarship. Kerry Dean Carso presents the influence of the landscape and industrial development of Rondout (later Kingston), New York, McEntee s native city. David Schuyler reappraises the art and career of this fascinating artist, who played such a pivotal role in the art and culture of his day. The catalogue also includes reprints of key texts from the rare memorial publication "Jervis McEntee: American Landscape Painter" (1892)."

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Its good. Its funny. Its my pick for this years best 'How to' guitar book By mervyns I bought this with a view to upgrading my jazz-guitar skills but discovered this book offers a whole lot more than guitar playing instruction. I am a better musician for reading it, plain and simple. Richard Niles is a masterful educator because while his approach is light-hearted, a lot of knowledge is packed into every laugh. There is a place for humour, nay a need for humour, in education, and this strikes a chord with me. Congratulations on maybe the most efficient ‘How to play guitar’ book I have yet come across. Its certainly the funniest. Recommended for all guitar players out there with room for improvement.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Everything you need to understand and play jazz (on any instrument) is in this book. By Lauren Passarelli From Dreaming To Gigging: Jazz Guitar in 6 Months Richard is brilliant & hilarious. Everything you need to understand and play jazz (on any instrument) is in this book. The title seems like a fantasy, but if you diligently follow his guidance, you will be improvising and expressing yourself sooner than you think. Richard is intelligent, organized and able to present a subject as deep as jazz in a step wise, make serious progress, systematic, yet artful way. He's got you covered, you will learn, you will understand, you will know. You'll be gigging in six months. Lauren Passarelli, Professor of Guitar, Berklee College of Music

I feel like I'm beginning to know what I'm doing By Garrett Wolfe Simon This book is a MUST have for anyone who wants to express themselves, not only on guitar, but on bass, piano, or perhaps even sitar! I've been playing professionally for half a century, and for the first time, since I cracked open this book, I feel like I'm beginning to know what I'm doing. And while I am learning to master my musical language and craft, Dr. Niles keeps me laughing. This is the most informative, easy to use, and fun music text I have ever used. My only complaint is that he didn't write it decades ago. 8 out of five stars!!!

Stanley Kubrick’s ‘The Shining’ has secured its place in popular culture as one of the most famed and influential horror films ever made. On the surface, the movie unfolds as a straightforward ghost story, yet the ambiguous overtones of the narrative fail to confirm the presence of dark spirits at the Overlook Hotel. Accordingly, it is possible to remove from the film the element of the supernatural and interpret the story in a completely different light. Applying Freudian psychoanalysis, The Shining Explored examines Kubrick’s masterpiece from a psychological standpoint in order to derive a rational, real world explanation for the homicidal tendencies of Jack Torrance and for the bizarre events that transpire in the film. Moreover, the essay examines a number of key texts read by Kubrick and co-writer, Diane Johnson prior to writing the screenplay for The Shining including Sigmund Freud’s ‘The Uncanny’ and Bruno Bettelheim’s ‘The Uses of Enchantment’. These texts offer clues toward underlying themes suggested in the film that Kubrick might well be alluding to. The goal of this essay is to put forth a credible interpretation of The Shining that reflects a sound portrayal of its characters by means of embracing central concepts echoed throughout Kubrick’s work. At its core, The Shining employs a labyrinth of symbols and metaphors that allow the audience to interpret the film however they please; The Shining Explored strives to offer an insightful glimpse into this labyrinth.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A great buy! By Kroemer Andreas I bought the book because I'm a huge fan of Kubrick's work. Still today, after having watched "The Shining" dozens of times, I'm left with a notion of: "Did I really get it all? Did I fully understand what Kubrick was saying?" And the answer is always "no"! After having read Paul Whittington's book, the movie feels all fresh to me. Other than answering every possible question, Whittington unlocks doors and provides the reader with new room for interpretation. He delves into every character's psyche and explains with great detail their relationships. Nietzsche and especially Freud serve as the foundations for Whittington's psychoanalysis of the main character, Jack Torrance. Lots and lots of intriguing fact and detail is pointed out, that can be witnessed and discovered going frame-by-frame, if you own a copy of the film. Very impressive!Paul Whittington is also a highly regarded filmmaker and stop-motion artist. His storytelling ability shines in this book as it's compellingly written, comfortable to read and easy to follow. For the hardcore Kubrick-fans, it's packed with facts that add a whole new angle to the viewing experience! ...Should come with every copy they sell!

Every autumn, thousands of migrating Red-tailed Hawks arrive on the southern Great Plains to spend the winter, and Oklahoma is one of the best places to observe this amazing phenomenon. Above the prairie, as Oscar Hammerstein wrote, they make “lazy circles in the sky,” but not for entertainment, theirs or ours. Author Jim Lish draws on more than forty years’ experience as a professional biologist and ornithologist to present almost two hundred color photographs of Red-tails and relate important lessons in southern Great Plains biodiversity, underscoring the place of the Red-tailed Hawk in Oklahoma’s tallgrass prairie ecology.Winter’s Hawk introduces the reader to the hawk’s biology, social behavior, and useful role in limiting destructive rodent populations. In sharing many anecdotes from his long experience in the field, Lish describes the hunting techniques of Red-tails, their competition with other raptors, and their behavior in the presence of human observers. He describes the subtle differences in plumage, and other characteristics between the various subspecies of Red-tailed Hawks that winter here. His account of their behavior includes intergenerational warfare, in which young Red-tails are frequently the losers. Detailed and scientifically accurate, this informal, jargon-free account will appeal to birders, sportsmen, naturalists, and falconers, as well as biologists. Red-tails can see ultraviolet light, which enables them to easily locate trails left by rodents. Cotton rats are by far their most important winter food, but they also eat carrion, large snakes, medium-sized mammals, and smaller birds. The main motive for the birds’ behavior, Lish reminds us, is survival, and he includes birds’-eye views of the hazards Red-tails face: foot injuries, damage to feathers, starvation, electrocution, and illegal shooting. A treasure trove of rich descriptive writing and astonishing photographs, Winter’s Hawk inspires readers to help preserve these magnificent birds of prey so that future generations may see a Red-tail standing sentinel over a field or circling above it.

Review “No two Red-tailed Hawks look alike, and the sight of them can stir wonder. Sharing forty years of observations and insights in this book, Jim Lish presents an intimate portrait of a magically complex and versatile predator through words and evocative photographs. He reminds us of how wild nature, even close to home, profoundly enriches our lives.”—Charles R. Preston, author of Golden Eagle: Sovereign of the Skies and Senior and Founding Curator, Draper Natural History Museum, Buffalo Bill Center of the West, Cody, Wyoming“No one has more knowledge of the Red-tailed Hawks of the southern Great Plains than Jim Lish. This beautiful book’s unmatched photography and in-depth, often personal account amply display Lish’s love of and lifetime’s experience with this iconic species.”—Jerry Liguori, author of Hawks at a Distance: Identification of Migrant Raptors

Sullivan For looking at raptors, especially Red-tailed Hawks, there are few places more exciting than the southern Great Plains in winter. Here the diversity of Red-tailed Hawk subspecies reaches its maximum, and the density of wintering birds is extremely high. Among the more typical Eastern Red-tailed Hawks, birders will find a bewildering degree of variation, ranging from the pale Krider's Red-tailed Hawk, to the blackish Harlan's Red-tailed Hawk. Jim Lish, an Oklahoma local, knows these birds as well as anyone, and each winter he dedicates a tremendous amount of time to photograph and document the diversity of Red-tailed Hawks (and other raptors) on the Great Plains. This book is a must read for birders interested in raptors, and for those of us who find Red-tailed Hawks especially interesting, it is simply indispensable. Excellent photographs are wrapped in concise ID text, as well as a healthy dose of natural history information, giving the reader a first-hand look at these amazing birds, and a sense of what it's like to visit this incredibly important place for wintering raptors.

Shaw For more than 40 years, Dr. Jim Lish has studied raptors, including annual replicated surveys on the abundance of red-tailed hawks in north-central Oklahoma. With its central location and high abundance of cotton rats and other small rodents, Lish's wintering survey area attracts all five of the main morphological variants of the species: Krider's, Harlan's, Eastern, Western, and Fuertes', including various intergrades between them.Aimed at anyone with a passion for hawks, the book is written in an engaging, popular style, interspersing details of red-tailed hawk biology between descriptions of observations in the field. Lish explains, for example, that when hawks make their "lazy circles in the sky", they use their abilities to "see" dried rodent urine, as their visual range extends into the ultraviolet. Such abilities, combined with their huge wintering numbers, make them a major ecological force.Even more special are Lish's nearly 200 color photos, a collection made possible only by a dedicated, skilled photographer spending thousands of hours in the field. One incredible photo shows a redtail carrying off a northern shoveler. Another depicts a luckless redtail dropping a cotton rat. Toward the book's center are two composite photos that show all the major color patterns for redtails, along with intergrades between them. These composites allow serious birders to hone their skill in identifying what may well be the most morphologically diverse bird in North America.

By Clay Sutton I have just finished reading Winter’s Hawk, and I wanted to share what a masterful book it is. It is superb! I enjoyed every word and every photo, and feel that it is the finest raptor book that I have seen in a very long while. It combines excellent, informative text and extraordinary photography. The layout and design of Winter’s Hawk are exceptional.I really liked how Jim Lish approached the text, and how he imparted a great deal of information in a concise yet highly readable way - one that just pulled me in as a reader. His anecdotes and stories are great fun. I know that Lish is a professor at the University of Oklahoma, and I’ll bet he is a great one.I loved the wonderful array of photos in Winter’s Hawk, a mix of close ups - showing all of the highly varied and beautiful plumages of Red-tails - and then, importantly, stepping back to show the hawks in the landscape. This is key to the point and purpose of the book – the relation of Red-tails to their habitat and the wide-open Oklahoma landscape. I felt the book in this regard was quite well done, and it said - and showed - so much about the birds and their place in the Southern Plains region. It is clear that this book was a labor of love for Jim Lish. His love of Red-tailed Hawks came through loud and clear, and it is a wonder many folks share. I have always loved Red-tails; as generalists they have mastered so many habitats and places. They are a relatively common and well-known hawk, but they are important indicators of the health of our rural, as well as urban, landscapes. This book will help you understand Red-tails as you never have before.Having now read and reread Winter’s Hawk, I am compelled to visit the Southern Plains in winter. Lish’s stunning words and images show it not only as an important wintering area for Red-tails, but also as an exceptionally beautiful landscape, and a truly inviting area for anyone who loves raptors. So I give Jim Lish and Winter’s Hawk a two thumbs up well done! Winter’s Hawk is simply amazing. It is a wonderful book that is at the same time both a visual feast and an evocative tribute to an amazing bird. I wish to thank Jim Lish for sharing all he did.Clay SuttonCo-author of Hawks in Flight. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2012
