Hayes Ninja Slayer Kills, which is an adaptation of a novel that isnt published in america, is an accessible and fast paced mature take on the ninja action genre of stories. The plot may be been there done that offering nothing new beyond cybernetics tied into the ninjas, but man is it charming. I found myself initially turned off by how standard it was but by the time the second arc was going on, I started to really want to see Ninja Slayer-san succeed in his mission. The enemies too with their personalities ended up making it enjoyable, Darkninja-san was easily the one to make this special as well as the first major enemy. I even liked the sensei too. Im hyped for more of this series just to see where it goes as the Six Gates antagonists of the dark syndicate get a focus to take down Ninja Slayer-san.In terms of translation quality and readability, it was on the more challenging side. It appeared that the editor and translator decided to go with using two types of translation pages for this instead of footnotes on a page or using their translated terms in the text bubble. For people who are familiar to anime and some Japanese words, they wouldnt have trouble understanding gomen and domo, but for others it would be annoying turning to the end of the volume to understand these terms as well as many more technical way of the ninja type of terms. I would have preferred the translated words or footnotes be used in the pages with the words instead of going for the stylish choice and putting it at the end of the volume. Also, this manga leaves the honorifics in the translation as well. Oh the positive side, there were no typos anywhere. The text flowed easily. Sound effects were translated underneath the Japanese characters (katakana). Extras (design sheets of the characters) were translated as well which was pleasing. The design commentary ended up being pretty chuckle inducing at times. There was also a translated afterword.All in all, Ninja Slayer Kills may be a story that we've all encountered before but its pleasing and stylish artwork, cybernetic ninjas, page spreads that ooze coolness in everyday imaginable, and charming characters, makes it worth checking out.

Graphic, Edgy, Violent Goodness By OutlawPoet It's been a long time since I've read any Manga and what a reintroduction this was!Ninja Slayer Kills is violent, graphic, and a bit of cyberpunk ninja killing goodness. In his intro, the author entreats you to go to the back of the book and read his glossary prior to starting the book. I would agree that you should do so. While many of the words are common, the author has infused his own nuances into the definitions of these words, This is important because those nuances add to the world building here.Koutarou Sekine further explains that he hoped to make this accessible to new Manga readers and those new to this world. As a reader far removed from manga (it became a horrendously expensive hobby for me once upon a time), he was largely successful. It did take me a little bit to get up to speed on the story, but once I was, I was hooked.Please note that, while in English, this is very Japanese Manga - don't expect anything Americanized. The graphics are very traditional, while still being modern and edgy.I'm afraid my very expensive hobby has returned. I want to read more of this!

I am familiar with graphic novels in that I know of their existence. The first thing I noticed and I'm sure everyone who reads these books are familiar with, is that you read the book backwards. You start on what would be the last page of a regular book and instead of reading the pages from left to right, you read them from right to left. Interesting to say the least, but after a few pages it seemed pretty normal.The story itself was fun but I had trouble trying to decipher the illustrations. To be honest it was hard to follow the first time I read it, so I read it again and gleaned moe information that made the story make more sense. The illustrations need improvement, but as I am not familiar with this type of work, it may just be the style that was confusing.I do appreciate the translations to the action sound symbols and the glossary of terms in the back. That added depth to the story I would have otherwise glossed over.I went with four stars for the story and the glossary. I think the graphics were more at three stars because they were in my opinion, confusing.

By Charles777 I really hate to write a negative review for a small press monster mag/book, but the buyer needs to beware. The writing is truly horrible. The author of the review/synopsis (don't really know what is was) for Gargoyles must believe that he is clever and funny. He is neither. Just an obnoxious writer with little command of the English Language. There are just too many other mags that specialize in horror to waste your money on this one.

Obviously these guys are doing this for the love of it. And this kind of passion is sorely lacking in publishing today. Show your support and pick up a copy of MONSTER. It's like fanzine from back in the day. I miss those days too.

So I decided to read this book to remember how to draw people.I can say that there are very good advices on how to prepare for painting and how to choose the right pencil. And there were given excellent advices on the construction of proportions for drawing the human body. I think that drawing people is the most difficult thing in the work of the artist. Therefore, I recommend to all the artists who want to learn how to draw people to study this book.

By going through the 9 chapters of this book, we can get the basic concepts of drawing. Everything is clearly mensioned with picture. Well structured and direct description. Appendix included list of sites where we can learn drawing which a great thing. I personally recommend this book.

94 of 95 people found the following review helpful. Oil Pastel: Materials and Techniques for Today's Artist By G. Creagh Wohltmann This is an unusually thorough book. If you can get your hands on a copy, you should do so. Unfortunately, it is out of print. The publisher is Watson-Guptill and the book was originally published in 1990. The ISBN No. is 0-8230-3310-4. Here's why the book wins my vote:It has a ton of pictures of finished art works done in oil pastel and in mixed media, using oil pastel and other media. There is a section which tells of the lightfastness of different brands of oil pastel currently on the market so readers can see actual pictures of brands exposed to sunlight for 3 months and how the sunlight does/doesn't alter the colors. There is also a "nitty-gritty" section describing the characteristics of each major brand available on the market currently, as of 1990 when the book was written, but these are the same brands available today (creaminess, hardness and what you can do with each). There are detailed diagrams of different methods of using oil pastels, broken down into steps, so readers have step by step directions of how to use oil pastels in a variety of ways. There are many ideas for composition using oil pastels. The author, Kenneth Leslie, makes it a point to tell readers exactly how each of the many works shown were developed in oil pastel (e.g., by direct observation of objects such as in a still-life, or by using photographs or collage, etc.) and on what kind of supports (e.g. which grounds to use on paper, museum board, masonite, wood, etc.) There are just lots and lots of pointers about using the medium of oil pastel. Many ideas of using oil pastels in concert with other media serve as a springboard for individual ideas. For example, I read a section of explanation and then, quite easily, I could mentally figure out how to apply the techniques shown to my own work. This will be my bible for doing oil pastel painting.

36 of 45 people found the following review helpful. not for an advanced artist By SuburbanHousewifeMN While Leslie writes beautifully, the only real information I learned from this book was which pastels held the best lightfastness rating and one technique of scratching I hadn't yet considered. Other than that, this book is geared very much towards beginners of oil pastel. All of the beautifully colored pieces he has pictures tend to lean towards abstract and illustrative ideas and expressions vs. more realistic interpretations of things. Additionally as a result there's really no other meathod to learn from in this book. He brushes against the ability to make realistic pictures via one artist, but goes into no detail as to how she accomplishes this task. The other great disappointment to me was Leslie's work itself. All of his works shown throughout could have been created by a High school student. He shows no real ability or understanding of how this medium can be worked. I would not recommend this book at it's original price of $32 and especially would not recommend spending double that for a used out of print copy. Save your money and check it out at the library or look for more informationon the internet.

Geek Chic Pixel Art By Beth - I Sniff Books When coloring enthusiasts open up Pixel Power, they will be greeted by a letter from Dmitrii Vlasov on the reverse side of the front cover. Next is a seven-page full color introduction with three sections: (1) creating your own pixel art, (2) color tips, and (3) and 28 full-color thumbnails of all the pixel art featured on the coloring pages.Then the coloring pages! Each coloring page is a double-page spread. The left page features a gray-scale thumbnail of the coloring page on the right page. Below the thumbnail, there is a quote related to heroism and leadership. And the bottom third of the left page features a blank pixel grid sized 2.75 x 4.25. Each grid has a different caption asking colorists to design something specific. Oh how I swoon for these blank grids — what a fun way to create your own themed pixel art! The right page, of course, features the pixel designs. And a huge thank you to Vlasov who was so kind as to outline the design elements in blank lines on the grid! Instant coloring fun!(As a side note, like most coloring books, the art is printed on both sides of the page, but I did notice that the pages are perforated.)Pixel Power is super cool in the nerdiest way. I enjoy it because, unlike photography, the subject is selective, focused on one part of, say a plant, and sees the environment much like I do. Yes, I'm an artist too. I enjoy this book. Great delivery service. It came quickly.

Not quite surreal By Floccinaucinihilipilification This is a small coffee table book with a good collection of Dali's artworks.The text is provides a basic, superficial overview of Dali's life and art. Neret's extensive use of extended quotes in the place of actually authoring content can be annoying.Overall, an acceptable introduction to Dali with a good timeline of his life and work at the end. Buy the book for its art, not its text content.

Incredible book and important cause By JO Reynolds This is a very important book, especially in light of what is happening in the world right now. 50 sites, eight essays by some of our time's finest minds, and striking images from renowned photographers. It is a call to save the treasures of the world and to visit them while you still can. Well done.

By Mike O'Connor WORLD MONUMENTS, 50 IRREPLACEABLE SITES TO DISCOVER, EXPLORE AND CHAMPION is a triple-threat book. It interweaves concise histories of many of the world's most beautiful sites with information on preservation efforts directed at those same sites and illustrates all that with marvelous color and b&w photographs of such delights as the Taj Mahal, Stowe House, Brancusi's Endless Column, the Petra Archaeological Site and the Chancellerie D'Orleans. A 2015 Rizzoli release, the book is a breathtaking, informative and compelling look at the current state of our earth's cultural heritage.The book is divided into eight chapters, each with a different theme. The 'War and Human Conflict' chapter, for example, describes the impact that conflict has had on such sites as Coventry Cathedral in England, Cambodia's Angkor Park and Krakow's Tempel Synagogue. The 'Natural Catastrophe and Climate Change' chapter, likewise, summarizes the natural dangers posed to Venice, the Petra Site and New Orleans neighborhoods.
