The sudden revelation of a powerful religious calling was an entirely unexpected event in the life of a college student named Lauren. But when it became clear to her that she had a spiritual vocation, she made the exceptional decision to dedicate her life to God. Drawing upon many visits to the cloistered religious community of Dominican nuns in Summit, New Jersey, photographer Toni Greaves has created a luminous body of work that follows the transformative journey by which Lauren became Sister Maria Teresa of the Sacred Heart. Presented in an exquisite photobook volume featuring a luxe cloth case, these meditative photographs capture the radical joy of a life dedicated unequivocally to love.

By CNemaz My copy of 'Radical Love' arrived and I dropped everything to spend a delicious, indulgent hour reading every word and perusing every photo. Toni Greaves has presented an intimate look at something 99% of the population will never encounter. I am not Catholic, and I've heard the usual banter about nuns in Catholic schools as well as read Karen Armstrong's arduous, short-lived journey down that path. Poring through this book, however, I cannot help but sense an undercurrent of change as modern, 21st Century women heed a call which has proven timeless. Greaves' images (and her words) left me filled with admiration for her subject, for her, and with an overwhelming sense of peace and gratitude for the devotion of these women on behalf of the world. As a documentary photographer myself, I am inspired. As a human being, I am in awe.

I love these images By Carli Davidson I love these images, I found myself in a moment wanting the sweetness of being surrounded by sisters that comes with being a nun... and I'm as much of a heathen as you can possibly imagine. Really humanizing and haunting. I look forward to contemplating these photos more. Training Fred is a personal favorite.

An astounding, powerful book By Barbara Ludwig Coleman I'm not a writer so I won't be able to fully give justice to what this book means to me and what emotions it evokes, but being a graphic designer and working with photographers enables me to give you some sense of the power of what I've experienced in reading and viewing it (time and time again I might add; it's that powerful). I've had the distinct pleasure of working with Ms. Greaves on a project for Cleveland Clinic, one of the top five hospitals in the country, and that experience alone wowed me. Toni is beyond a photographer/photo journalist: She was able to capture the acute illness of most of our patients while at the same time being discreet in shooting their sickness and their pain. She also endeared herself to many of the patients I would venture to say due to her truly caring nature. This book, Radical Love, some of whose photos I had the pleasure of seeing before, but most I have not, reminds me of the grace, caring, and fearlessness which Toni brings to her work. It's not just the tonality, the cropping, the in-camera capture of each photo, but the breadth and depth of humanity in pictorially telling the story of Sister Lauren. It brings me to tears and yet I can be laughing several pages further into it. It is a book I do and will treasure for many a year, and I plan on sharing it with my colleagues who also had the pleasure of meeting Toni and being amazed by her work. They will be astounded, as will you.

Arthur Rackham was a Victorian born illustrator and artist who influenced much of the book and commercial illustration of the first half of the 20th Century. The impish detail of his hundreds of drawings brought humour and dark detail to the fairy stories and classic tales which were popular at the time, from Washington Irving to the Brothers Grimm, Peter Pan to his exquisite work on the Alice in Wonderland. His water-colour work, and the graceful power of his ink and line work influenced the Golden Age illustrators of the 1920s, through to the pulps of Weird Tales, and the comic books of today. Arthur Rackham: Masterpieces of Art is a celebration of this industrious and lively artist.

By Muriel Elaine Wood Very nice little series of compact art books--I already own a couple of their other titles. Very heavy on the illustrations, which are high-quality, crisp and quite colorful. Not overladen with text, but what there is is informative. These volumes make a pretty good introductory tool to the various artists covered and are certainly worth the price.

The first retrospective of the pioneering work of Harry Gruyaert

Born in Antwerp in 1941 and a member of Magnum Photos since 1982, Harry Gruyaert revolutionized creative and experimental uses of color in the 1970s and 1980s. Influenced by cinema and American photographers, his work defined new territory for color photography: an emotive, non-narrative, and boldly graphic way of perceiving the world. In 1972, while living in London, Gruyaert created the striking series TV Shots by turning the dial on a television set at random and photographing the distorted images he saw there. A later series, Made in Belgium, portrays his ambivalent relationship with his homeland in a palette of saturated tones. In his most recent work, he embraces the possibilities of digital photography, taking further creative risks to capture light in new ways. Gruyaert’s images are autonomous, often independent of any context or thematic logic. This volume, the first retrospective of his work, is a superb overview of his personal quest for freedom of expression and the liberation of the senses. 80 color illustrations

Review “While the colors might pull you in, what is happening within the frame of Gruyaert’s photographs stand alone primarily because his intent is to create a narrative within a single image.” (Slate―Behold Photo Blog)“Graphic, charged, documentary-style color photographs. . . . Spans Mr. Gruyaert’s evolution as an artist.” (Lens: The New York Times Photography Blog)“Demonstrates that color can indeed be employed to compose exceptional photographs… Ideal for anyone curious about contemporary photography, photojournalism, and, of course, color photography.” (Library Journal)“Seamless and transporting… Gruyaert is in many ways kin to Garry Winogrand and Lee Friedlander, but he works in bold saturated color… In a world filled with street photographers, these days working mostly in color, Gruyaert's is a singular vision.” (The New York Times Book Review)

About the Author François Hébel is the curator of the Harry Gruyaert show at the Maison Européene de la photographie in April 2015. He has been producer, curator, and author of numerous exhibitions and books.

It reminds me that not all street photography is about getting in someone's face with a camera and flash and freaking them out while you snap their photo. Color, line, geometry and just one great image after another.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. There's a consistent grace in the palette Gruyaert applies here ... By E. Klatt There's a consistent grace in the palette Gruyaert applies here. It's somber, kind of melancholic - a deep, thick color saturation with a Kodachrome red hangover but one that seems to support his perspective about the human condition. There's a sense that he knows our absurd situation well enough but also sees a beauty in our trying to keep so many balls in the air at once.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Rather mediocre work overall By A photographer Although having been compared to some of my favorite artists like Saul Leiter, Alex Webb, William Eggleston and others due to his use of color, I simply cannot get into Harry Gruyaert's photography. Not that some of it is not impressive, it's just that he seems to change color palettes and techniques too much to produce consistency. Some of the photos here are simply dreadful. His 1972 TV images apparently were praised at the time as being unique yet taking pictures of distorted television images was commonplace among photographers I knew personally during this period. I also did it and, like others, just considered it an exercise rather than serious work. We all tossed out our slides like painters throwing away failed practice drawings. Other images presented here are weak and, in some cases, the colors are so off they make the subjects look ill. There is no doubt Gruyaert has made a successful career from his work so it's hard to criticize his vision. Still, it leaves me unenthusiastic.

On May 17, 1957, Lee Friedlander was given full access to photograph the participants of the Prayer Pilgrimage for Freedom in Washington, DC. This extraordinary event brought together many of the great thinkers and leaders of the civil rights movement and solidified Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. s position as its preeminent leader. The 58 previously unpublished photographs reproduced as duotones in this important and beautifully produced commemorative record are among Friedlander s earliest work. With his full access to the presenters stage, Friedlander was able to portray the famous individuals at the event - Mahalia Jackson, A. Philip Randolph, Harry Belafonte, Ruby Dee among many others - as well as the audience of some 25,000 men, women and children who gathered to give voice and energy to the ideas embattled by the movement. Timed with the three-year anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education, the Prayer Pilgrimage placed pressure on the Eisenhower administration to uphold desegregation in the South and made voting rights a focal point of the struggle for equality. Also included in this publication is a facsimile typescript from The King Center of MLK s Give Us the Ballot speech and additional ephemera from the march, including the printed program and the Call to Prayer distributed to participants. The complete (and only existing) set of the 58 prints, acquired by Yale University Art Gallery will be on exhibition at YUAG and other venues in 2017 in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Prayer Pilgrimage.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. The artist as a very young man By B. D. Colen This little book is an absolute must for anyone interested in either Friedlander, a leading 20th century street and art photographer, or in understanding the growth and development of avisual artist. Shot by Friedlander in 1957, when he was only 23 and had barely begun his photographic career, these black and white images of an historic Washington civil rights rally bare only the slightest resemblance to the photographer's later work. That said, these powerful, evocative images of unknown foot soldiers and ultimately beatified leaders of the civil rights struggle, demonstrate that even at an early stage in his artistic development Friedlander had the eye for detail, and compositional ability, that would make him one of the greats. In addition to being of great interest to those who care about photography, this book is a must have for anyone with an interest in the American civil rights movement.

Abilez Tejano music icon, Johnny Hernandez, has written his autobiography titled, THE COTTON PICKER/ AN ODYSSEY which is a must have for all Tejano music fans and historians to own and have. Johnny Hernandez takes you along his personal journey from a little boy growing up in a racist time in Texas, to the early days of Tejano music where he and his brother cleared the path for all artists to follow. His music career follows major events in our country's history, of which he played a part with his talent and music. Johnny Hernandez writes his book in such a way, that as you read, you feel like you are right there along with him through his life of success, hardship, highs and lows, drug addiction and even events during his life where evil and black magic tried to take control of his life as he lived the American dream. He answers the question about the reason for the breakup of Little Joe, Johnny y La Familia and why he chose to never perform again with his brother. Please order your copy today and read for yourself why Johnny Hernandez's autobiography is the best ever written by any artist in our Tejano music industry. He is an inspiration with his. message of "Don't Quit" and "Don't sell yourself short by not trying something new in your life," and "Believe In Yourself Always." Thank you Johnny for sharing your life story with all of us with your book.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. We need more of these as part of our Chicano history! By Stace I just got done reading the autobiography of Chicano music legend (and friend) Johnny Hernandez. Titled The Cottonpicker–An Odyssey, Hernandez takes us through various phases of his life: The kid who worked the cotton fields and went through a racist school system that left him in need of a formal education; the young teen dropout (I prefer pushout) who struggled job to job with a young family; the vocalist of an up-and-coming Chicano music band that made it big nationally and internationally; the successes of his songwriting and La Familia with him at the mic; the trials and tribulations that brought an end to the “Little Joe, Johnny y La Familia” era of the band; and his struggles as a solo act and a person. All of this, along with familiar stories of family love, personal struggles with drugs, alcohol, women, and business, and much more make for a book that was hard to put down. Add some personal successes in overcoming these struggles, and finding success in the radio business, and one can’t help but to feel good that Johnny is still around and thriving. What was the toughest read was Johnny’s depictions of his struggles with his brother. Frankly, I would think this is the part that people wanted to read most because for the longest time, people were too willing to blame Johnny for the “Little Joe/Johnny” break up. Like most band stories, there is much more to the story, and perhaps some bitter pills that we as fans must swallow. It is definitely an entry into musician life that we never experience.Of course, disturbing to me were the challenges Johnny faced as he attempted a solo career after La Familia. Being met with unhelpful promoters, producing and marketing his own albums, and trying to keep a band together aren’t necessarily new stories in music. They are part the overall story of what became of the Tejano market, where (in my opinion) big corporations exploited Tejano music, picked favorites, and left the industry in disarray once the cash wasn’t as lucrative. For Johnny, adding the 800 lb. gorilla that he was no longer a part of the premier TexMex band (La Familia), and one can only imagine Johnny’s struggles. As a fan of Johnny’s for a long time, I followed his solo career. I also noticed his long absence after his “big break” when Capitol EMI signed him, and his next return with various self-produced albums. This book fills in a lot of those gaps that many fans will appreciate.I’ll also say that Johnny putting his story in print isn’t only good for the fans, but it’s good for Chicano history. Seldom has the story of our culture and music been put in print, especially by the people that make the music. I hope this is the first of many more projects put out by some of our graying, yet continuing, Tejano titans. Great job, Johnny!

Hernandez Johnny Hernandez is a Mexican American "Chicano music legend" He and his brother Little Joe, changed the way traditional regional Mexican music was viewed. The Chicano soul filled horn accentuated music, filled the southwest, changed the socio political climate in the late 60tys as their song, "Las Nubes" was the soundtrack for the Farm Worker Movement. This book is about Johnny Hernandez's journey from the fields of Texas to the major rock venues around the country. Johnny tells about the highs and lows of being a true artist and the spiritual journey one has to take to find their true meaning in life. I am a Professor and a Doctor of Mass Media and I could not put the book down. The story is an American Classic and still resonates in my soul. Buy the book and learn some secrets............

Saying these stories are "short" is like saying Alabama summers are "warm".... but this southerner loved it By Goldengate I had expected a collection of short stories, but these are really brief flashes -- most only a page or two. At first I found this really annoying -- the author would reel me in with a catchy headline and a story and then boom! it was over. Dagnabbit as we used to say in the South, I want to sink my teeth into these vignettes, not have them whiz by only for me to turn the page and start another one. However, once I let that go, I got used to the cadence and the pages flew by as I chuckled and remembered when I used to live in the South.Bragg is at his best when he's writing about what is clearly one of his favorite topics, southern food. I was reading this on a Southwest airplane eating a teeny tiny bag of honey peanuts while he described his mama making cornbread: "Later my mama would take the cracklin's and mix them in a skillet of cornmeal and then bake it. As the meal cooked, the essence of the cracklin's would melt through the pone of the bread, and when it was done she would cut it into triangles and serve it with pinto beans and stewed squash and slice Spanish onions and pickled pepper so hot it would blind a baby if he rubbed it on his eyes." I sat in my teeney airplane seat and I didn't know what in the heck pone is but I wanted some of that cornbread "right quick." My mouth watered as I ate my darn peanuts and began to plan my next trip home. And that's where Bragg's artistry lies - just a few sentences and you're there. I won't even repeat his description of a place called "Harold's Barbecue" because if I do both you, dear reader, and me are going to have to go eat something and I've got to finish this review. Also, I loved that he mentioned one of my favorite smoked fish shacks in St. Pete Florida... Ted Peter's. This man knows his food and I think his next book should be a food / travel-log of the South. But it's not all about the food.. it's the cadence, just the way of being in the South that's so unique and seems so strange when I fly back there from (crazy) California and feel the humidity and smell the biscuits. His description of his neighbors pulling together after a big tornado hit his town in Alabama made me wonder if my neighbors out here in California would do the same, I sure hope so. There's no hurt that can't be comforted with a casserole he says and I smile thinking of the countless casseroles that I've eaten in The South.Overall, well-written but a star off because I wanted these to be a little longer so I guess even that's a good sign. Y'all check it out, y'hear?

Indeed, indeed, I felt that sense of place in every story. This man knows how to write, and in his sense he brings us all the goodness, the fun, the ridiculous, the taste, the feel and the food of the South.Do not, whatever you do, read this when you are hungry, planning your next meal, digesting your previous meal, making your food shopping list, or just sitting and reading and minding your own business. The next thing you know you will be up out of your chair, going through the cupboards and the fridge looking for something to tide you over until you can get all the ingredients for that meal that Rick Bragg was just talking about. This is a very dangerous book, and no one who is thinking of or on a diet should read this. In fact, read this on a plane like I did, when the only food available is the blue chips and the attendant looks at you strangely when you ask if there are any more bags. The chapter on Table is all about food. It is my favorite chapter, and I read it twice. He starts with food and drink in New Orleans, snow cones and ends with stories about Grouper sandwiches. The stories in between are much too dangerous to relate at lunchtime. Maybe a big tomato sandwich, tomato fresh from the garden.Stories of rednecks, big storms, football in Alabama, his mother, his brother and his brother's dog Pretty Girl. All of these stories and more are such a treat. The Southern gentility we have all heard about comes peaking through. The people are fun, wise, rich and poor, but they all have heritage and stories to share. Holiday fruit cakes, 'Have Gun Will Travel' , and the Spirit of the South. It is all here, in these stories. Rick Bragg has had a Southern life and he loves to talk about it.Recommended. prisrob 08-09-15

Even if that assessment is a tad overstated it can be safely applied to his relationship with the American South. From his touching memoir of his mother, ‘All Over But the Shoutin’’ to his recent biography of Jerry Lee Lewis, his works have beautifully expressed his undying love affair with the land of his birth.‘My Southern Journey’ continues this love affair with a series of short articles, many reprinted from magazines, that describes, in his unique style, what makes ‘The South’ special. From its food to its music, from the back-country religions to its armadillos, Bragg describes them all and does in that passionately biased way that he has that imbues even the most mundane aspects of life with a quaint charm. As an unrepentant Yankee, I particularly enjoyed his descriptions of how the English language is spoken in the South differs from the rest of the country. Speaking of Thanksgiving, Bragg said ‘When I mentioned that we were having turkey and dressing at my house, my Yankee friends looked confused. You mean, they asked, the stuff you put on salads? It is a miracle we only fought one war.’Perhaps my favorite line from the book is when he describes his attitude towards drinking in general and drinking bourbon in particular. ‘I am not a big drinker, but there has always been something comforting about brown liquor. After one, I always felt like I was covered in a warm quilt. The secret, across my life and my ancestor’s lives, was not to drink seven more, turn the drink into a parachute, and jump off something tall.’Speaking of moderation, I wouldn’t describe the book as ‘sweet’ but after reading it I can almost hear some woman’s voice saying ‘Ain’t that sweet!’ As with most things that are sweet, it’s not always wise to take too much at one sitting. I found that I enjoyed the stories the most when I limited my reading to two or three stories at a time.****Quotations are cited from an advanced reading copy and may not be the same as appears in the final published edition. The review book was based on an advanced reading copy obtained at no cost from the publisher in exchange for an unbiased review. While this does take any ‘not worth what I paid for it’ statements out of my review, it otherwise has no impact on the content of my review.FYI: On a 5-point scale I assign stars based on my assessment of what the book needs in the way of improvements:• 5 Stars – Nothing at all. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.• 4 Stars – It could stand for a few tweaks here and there but it’s pretty good as it is.• 3 Stars – A solid C grade. Some serious rewriting would be needed in order for this book to be considered good or memorable.• 2 Stars – This book needs a lot of work. A good start would be to change the plot, the character development, the writing style and the ending.• 1 Star - The only thing that would improve this book is a good bonfire.
